Greek master Yorgos Lanthimos’ first English language film is a dark comedy as disturbing and entirely unsettling as his previous work – set in a world where single people are forced to find a mate within 45 days or be transformed into an animal of their choice. This is funny yet difficult viewing, a razor sharp satire with a premise that starts out an intriguing novelty before building to a brutal finale reminiscent of his previous masterpiece Dogtooth – laced with either a faint glimmer of hope or total heartbreaking devastation. Dripping with nightmarish originality and brilliance, The Lobster infests itself into the audience’s mind like a disease, lingering there for days afterwards.
