The rise and rise of Ben Mendelsohn continues with this drama about two gamblers on a road trip to a poker game in New Orleans, helmed by the recently announced directors of the upcoming superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel – Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This slow burn indie is as far from a superhero CGI-fest as possible and all the better for it – a casually paced showcase for the brilliantly laconic Mendelsohn and his partner in crime Ryan Reynolds. The duo have a natural chemistry – Mendelsohn suitably haggard as the addict and Reynolds as charismatic as always. Mississippi Grind is in no hurry, but is charming in its own funny, despairing way.
