Kumail Nanjiani makes his debut as a leading man playing himself in a film co-written with his wife Emily V. Gordon, telling the story of how they first met and fell in love before a rare illness left Emily in an induced coma. The script is hilarious, nicely skewering the standard rom-com formula, while Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Anupam Kher and Zenobia Schroff almost steal the movie entirely as the couple’s respective parents. Nanjiani is the star here though, an unlikely but completely likeable lead whose natural lethargic charm is a perfect fit for the film’s relaxed, pleasant vibes. The Big Sick is familiar yet original, a heartwarming and hilarious true story.
