This year’s Best Picture Oscar winner follows the life of a young black man split over three stages of his development – as a child, teen and adult. Beautifully filmed with a dreamlike patience by writer and director Barry Jenkins and anchored by three great central performances from Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes as the lead character Chiron, Moonlight is a subtle and highly original piece that clearly stamps Jenkins as one of the best filmmakers around. Delicately handled and incredibly intimate, it’s bolstered by a beautifully sympathetic Mahershala Ali and Janelle Monáe as the sole rays of hope in Chiron’s heartbreaking adolescence.
