A James Franco vehicle about an overprotective father meeting his daughter’s new boyfriend for the first time, this is a standard rom com that relies entirely on a great cast – Franco as the eccentric millionaire Laird Mayhew, Bryan Cranston and Megan Mullally the doting parents, rising star Zoey Deutch as their beloved daughter, and most entertainingly Keegan-Michael Key as Laird’s best friend, butler and trainer Gustav. It’s never great or entirely original, but also never less than enjoyable, thanks in large part to a brilliantly loose and typically game performance from Franco. With a few nicely leftfield laughs scattered throughout, Why Him? is weirdly likeable, mindless fun.
