The underrated Gore Verbinski takes a step away from his Pirates Of The Caribbean and Lone Ranger Hollywood blockbusters for a dark and trippy horror about an ambitious executive searching for his company’s missing CEO in a secluded wellness centre in the Swiss Alps. The talented leads Dane DeHaan and Mia Goth appear made for this world and Verbinski bathes the screen in gorgeous colours and artful shadows from the very beginning, but a few genuinely creepy scares can’t make up for a lacklustre first half. As a result A Cure For Wellness looks stunning throughout, but only truly comes alive during its demented finale – an explosion of fire and violence dripping with unhinged lunacy.
