The true story of a pair of childhood friends who become US government deceiving international arms dealers, War Dogs teams The Hangover director Todd Phillips with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller for mixed results. Scorsese showed how best to craft a film around truly unlikeable lead characters with the brilliant The Wolf Of Wall Street, but here Phillips struggles to nail the right tone. There are laughs here and there and the two leads are solid, but a limp third act and messy editing spoil any pre-release promise. Bradley Cooper steals every scene he’s in with an intimidating supporting role, but overall this could have been so much better.
