The story of British cult sports hero Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards is given the big screen treatment in a typically crowd-pleasing biopic starring Kingsmen: The Secret Service’s Taron Egerton as the title character and Hugh Jackman as his reluctant coach Bronson Peary. The two stars are brilliant, Egerton all charming spirit and Jackman his gruff counterpart, and the film’s 80s influences are a nice touch. Eddie The Eagle is a standard underdog sports story, complete with inspirational training montages and rousing third act, but the fact we’ve seen it all before can’t take away from its infectious optimism and undeniably uplifting conclusion.
