A remake of the Oscar winning Argentinian film of the same name, Secret In Their Eyes begins with the death of an FBI investigator’s daughter and unfolds its devastating impact on the three main characters over the next thirteen years. Director Billy Ray’s rehash can’t match the brilliance of the original, but through no fault of the stars involved – Julia Roberts is suitably gaunt and traumatized as the mourning mother, while Chiwetel Ejiofor is typically excellent as her ex-partner obsessed with solving the case. They do their best despite Ray’s unfortunate direction, which somehow overrides a solid plot and impressively grim ending to make for a surprisingly dull feature.
