The directors of the documentary Catfish return with a teen thriller starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco as two participants of an online game challenging users to accept a series of increasingly risky dares. It’s a fast paced and entertaining ride for half the film – a breezy adventure aimed squarely at the IPhone generation that opts for fun over blunt messaging – right up until its completely ludicrous third act that buries any relevant themes in implausibility and cringe-worthy preaching. Still, Roberts and Franco are solid leads and with welcome appearances by fan favourite Samira Wiley and the legendary Juliette Lewis, Nerve is a mindlessly enjoyable way to pass the time.
