Uncomfortable viewing from the outset, Sinister stars Ethan Hawke as a true crime author haunted by an evil spirit after moving into a home shrouded in horrific secrets. It begins as a cheap B-movie standard but quickly wraps its unsettling claws around you like its spine tingling antagonist Mr. Boogie. What it lacks in heart stopping scares it makes up for in creepy vibes – director Scott Derrickson uses scenes of Hawke alone in a darkened room watching disturbing home movies he found in the attic in much the same way Paranormal Activity used its fright-anticipating time lapse footage. By no means a classic, this is still a surprisingly effective supernatural horror.
