Taika Waititi follows up the announcement that he’s the latest director in charge of a Marvel blockbuster with this brilliant, offbeat comedy about an orphan and his reluctant foster father on the run from authorities in the deep New Zealand wilderness. Julian Dennison and Sam Neill are hilarious as the odd couple leading men, the hip-hop obsessed delinquent Ricky Baker and the gruff, monosyllabic Hec. The ending is a little too loose, an action packed finale that doesn’t quite match the subtle charm of the rest of the movie, but this is still Waititi’s best yet – Hunt For The Wilderpeople is charming, eccentric, touching and entirely endearing.
