A biopic of the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, split between the creation of their classic Pet Sounds album in the late 1960s and Wilson in the 80s, heavily medicated and under the control of his therapist/legal guardian. It’s an incredible story, but only a decent film. Director Bill Pohlad does well to differentiate it from the standard music biopic, but it only truly soars during the scenes showing a young Wilson creating his iconic songs. Thankfully Love & Mercy is worth it for the two remarkable lead performances alone – Paul Dano is a mirror image of the young singer while John Cusack is a genuine surprise as the latter period Wilson.
