Director Jonathan Levine teams again with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for a heartwarming Christmas movie about three friends on the final night of a drunken annual tradition. On face value The Night Before lacks the emotional weight of their previous collaboration – the cancer comedy 50/50 – but there are enough sprinklings of brilliance here to make it a winner, from Tracy Morgan’s excellent narration to the always incredible Michael Shannon using his trademark intensity to hilarious effect in a recurring cameo. Levine is becoming an expert at strangely beautiful R-rated comedies, and with this debaucherous, drug induced riot he’s created a Christmas movie to rival the best of them.
