Twenty years after the release of the film that turned Will Smith from a burgeoning star into a box office obliterating Hollywood overlord comes Independence Day: Resurgence, Roland Emmerich’s return to the franchise that set the template for mind-boggingly excessive disaster blockbusters. Emmerich’s willingness to embrace the absurdity of his movies makes them all undeniable guilty pleasures, but this needlessly late sequel commits the worst possible crime – it’s neither cheesy enough nor sufficiently over the top. Jeff Goldblum’s casual sarcasm is always welcome and new additions Liam Hemsworth and Maika Monroe do well in place of Smith, but this is unfortunately too easily forgettable to match the brilliant ridiculousness of the original.
