Nacho Vigalondo’s Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich genre mash-up is a brilliant concept that unfortunately doesn’t quite fulfil its promise – after a night of heavy drinking a woman discovers a manifestation of herself appearing in the form of a giant monster towering over South Korea. Anne Hathaway goes a long way to shredding her reputation as Hollywood’s most disliked actress, creating an endearingly vulnerable centrepiece for a movie that covers everything from alcoholism and misogyny to depression and abuse. Colossal is an inspired burst of originality that only begins to lose its way in a surprisingly dark third act, unfortunately turning a great movie into merely an interesting one.
