Adam McKay is not a name usually associated with hard hitting exposés on the financial crisis, but the director of Anchorman, Step Brothers and various other Will Ferrell vehicles has somehow turned a complicated and depressing topic into a scathingly hilarious comedy. The cast are uniformly incredible, from Brad Pitt’s smaller, subdued turn to Christian Bale’s note perfect social awkwardness, and the sly cameos from the likes of Margot Robbie and Selena Gomez to explain the complexities of the housing market are a stroke of pure genius. The dialogue stacked screenplay flies by in an awesome blizzard of one liners and sharp cuts – The Big Short is a mind-bogglingly entertaining near classic.
