Hugh Jackman’s farewell to the character that made him, this is easily the best film in the X-Men franchise. Set in a grim future where mutants are nearing extinction, Logan matches brutal, visceral violence with an unexpectedly deep emotional core. Freed from the restrictions of the franchise Patrick Stewart is extraordinary as the ailing Professor X, while 11 year old Dafne Keen is a silent coil of savagery that steals every scene she’s in. Jackman meanwhile leaves everything onscreen, a raw and wounded performance that could garner him an Oscar nomination. Stark and devastating, this does for the superhero genre what Clint Eastwood’s equally brilliant Unforgiven did for the western.
