After the measured genius of There Will Be Blood and The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson returns with an unexpected adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel Inherent Vice – a bizarre, crawling noir set in a 1970s California inhabited by drug addicts, prostitutes, cults and real estate tycoons. Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant as stoner/private investigator Doc, channelling Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski and casually drifting from one curious case to another. His hilarious scenes with Josh Brolin’s damaged cop are worth the price of admission alone. Equal parts confusing and enticing, this a charmingly haphazard offering from Anderson – a little loose, a little incoherent, and a lot weird.
