Buried in the shadows of the vastly superior Spotlight comes this frustratingly interpreted story detailing the fallout of a 60 Minutes II report questioning the legitimacy of George Bush’s military record. Truth starts well, with Cate Blanchett in typically blustering form as CBS producer Mary Mapes, before becoming mired in director James Vanderbilt’s bluntly one sided viewpoint. The preachy messaging may have had greater impact in the hands of a more subtle director, but here they simply sap the movie of any credibility – the biggest problem being the simple fact that it’s difficult to sympathize with the journalists in question given they so clearly didn’t do their jobs properly.
