A movie no-one asked for, The Huntsman: Winter’s War warrants viewing purely through a stacked cast. The film oozes likeable actors – Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, to name a few – but can’t ever escape the cloud of pointlessness lingering over it all. The stars all do their best, and it’s always a pleasure seeing Theron completely unhinged no matter how small the role is, but where the Kristen Stewart led original managed a visually impressive bleakness, this prequel/sequel flits awkwardly between gloomy self-importance and G-rated playfulness. New director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan strains for an emotional core, but this is clearly a franchise better left alone.
