After a reasonable beginning How To Be Single suddenly loses its charm, moving its focus from Dakota Johnson’s relatable Alice to Rebel Wilson’s unbridled Robin. The first half has a rushed and wasted feel – Wilson’s obnoxious supporting character shtick has definitely worn out its welcome and there are way too many plot threads being entertained – but somehow, so unexpectedly, it grows into an enjoyable, almost refreshing take on the standard rom-com formula. Johnson is the star, effortlessly likeable throughout and the standout in a satisfying third act that shrugs off the film’s earlier flaws. Neither hilariously funny nor particularly profound, this is still surprisingly worthwhile.
