The interesting true story of the discovery of common brain trauma suffered by NFL players, Concussion is a watered down biopic that plays it safe from the outset. Will Smith tones down his natural charisma as the affable Dr. Bennet Omalu to decent effect, but like the film itself, opts for crowd pleasing over any real emotional investment. Doesn’t drop to the depths of the cringe worthy The Blind Side, but shares a similar generic structuring and Disney-like pandering that at various stages threaten to destroy the film completely. An underwhelming effort, and one that disappointingly never aspires to be anything else.
