After the woeful second film appeared to hammer the nails into the series’ coffin, Bridget Jones’s Baby returns Helen Fielding’s creation to the capable hands of the original’s director Sharon Maguire with amusing results. Whether through sharp writing or just heartwarming bouts of nostalgia, this manages to equal the light enjoyment of the original, albeit in an entirely familiar way. Somehow lost amongst the bizarre furore surrounding the changing state of Renée Zellweger’s face is the fact that she gives the best performance of the series too, carrying the movie through its cheesiest moments. A surprisingly welcome addition after a 12 year break.
