The second feature film from Mélanie Laurent – the mesmerizing actress of Inglourious Basterds fame who is also building an impressive resume as director – Breathe is a look at the intense friendship between two young women, Charlie and the new student at her school Sarah. What begins with infatuation soon drifts towards jealousy, heartache and frustration, leading to a genuinely powerful ending in this dark and honest take on adolescence. Joséphine Japy and Lou de Laâge are wonderful as the two leads, but Laurent is the star, creating a foreboding atmosphere throughout. A patient and deliberate French drama that lingers long after it finishes.
