Paul Weitz’s career takes more steps away from his American Pie beginnings with this easy and amusing Lily Tomlin vehicle. When Elle’s pregnant granddaughter arrives on her doorstep desperate for help, the two embark on a road trip of sorts, revisiting various figures from Elle’s past to scrounge the money needed to pay for an abortion. Tomlin is terrific, sarcastically battling her way through every awkward encounter, while Julia Garner plays granddaughter Sage with a charming cluelessness. Grandma is not a groundbreaking film by any means, but is in stages both funny and poignant, a character study that suits Weitz much better than anything from his back catalogue.
